The original Bath Golf Club had it's home at Kingsdown but moved to its present location in 1881 and is now widely regarded as one of the best courses in the South West.
Built on Bathampton Down overlooking the Avon Valley, with superb views of Bath and the surrounding countryside, the course follows a distorted figure of eight around the top of the hill and starts with two interesting par fours that both measure around 300yds which often tempt the first time visitor into an ill-advised thrash.
On this occasion we'd recommend safety first as it on many of the holes. The course definitely favours the natural fader of the ball so one of the keys to scoring well here is to avoid hooking and pulling the ball. The other is being able to control the ball in the wind as sat at 6000 feet there's rarely less than a good breeze to counter.
In spite of being on high ground, the course provides a pleasant and untiring mixture of level and undulating playing conditions. Much of the original layout of the course has been retained and the tees, fairways and greens are maintained to a high standard. As a result Bath is a regular venue for Somerset County matches and championships.
