Mahee Island GC

The course at Mahee Island sits on a finger of land that reaches into Strangford Lough and it costs £12 to play during the week

Northern Ireland has long been a favourite destination for a golf trip and with course like Portstewart and Royal County Down, a jaunt across the Irish Sea is something you should consider. However, these great courses come at premium prices so it?s good to have a Plan B and yours should be Mahee Island GC.

Mahee is only 30 minutes drive from Belfast and as you turn off the A22 by the town of Comber you get the feeling you?re off on a golfing adventure. But keep going down this winding road and your patience will be rewarded.

The course at Mahee Island sits on a finger of land that reaches into Strangford Lough and it costs £12 to play during the week. Add to that awesome putting surfaces and a genuine welcome to visitors and you?ve got yourself a slice of golfing heaven.

The course itself is an excellent parkland layout with very small fast greens and although it?s a mere 5882 yards the ever present breeze which can stiffen dramatically means you have to keep on your toes if you?re to score well.

The 129-yard 8th, called Bird Island is the course?s signature hole and stood on the tee looking dowm the hill and beyond the small green you?ll get an incredible view over the Lough. We defy anyone not to be totally awe-strick by the sheer beauty of the place.

Best Hole: The 7th is a 436-yard par-4 which is a serious two or three shoter depending on the wind.

Green Fees: £12-17 per 18 holes

Location: Mahee Island, Comber, Newtownards, Down
