You will need to make sure you have a flat floor with enough space to lay the mat

First things first, the Perfect Practice Perfect Putting Mat is straight-forward to set-up, taking a mere few minutes, with the end result looking really premium. It features the mat itself, which is attached to the raised, wooden end part with two holes of different sizes in it. There is also a wooden backstop and four wooden slats that fit together to create a channel for the ball to roll back towards you.

In testing, the channel worked really well and, for more convenience, you can remove one of the slats when practicing the shorter putts. We felt that this could be one of the best golf training aids money can buy, with the mat working very well on both a tiled (kitchen) floor and carpeted floor. We should add that you must be careful with the way you store this item and take care when unrolling it. If you store it correctly, you should be able to get a smooth, consistent roll for many years.

One of our writers, David Usher, bought one of these during lockdown a few years ago and has said just how much he loves it. He said specifically; 'I can’t recommend it highly enough. I still occasionally set it up if I’ve been struggling with three or four footers as it helps massively with repetition of stroke and confidence building.'

Reasons to avoid

-
Limited off-course functionality

A GPS device is a must these days because there is no excuse for getting the wrong yardage when out on the course. A good way of dealing with this problem is a yardage device and, one of the best golf watches available is the Approach S12 from Garmin. It in at a slightly lower price point that represents excellent value. With access to more than 40,000 preloaded courses, finding your desired venue is extremely quick and easy.

From there, we found the usability of this watch to be brilliant. Off the tee, it provides loads of information on things like distances to bunkers, water hazards and ideal lay-up yardages, while you can also move the flag around to get a more exact number for your approach shots.

Another performance aspect we really liked was the measure-shot feature that does as you'd expect - it tracks how far you've struck a given shot. It's also really easy to input scores and a few stats at the end of each hole, giving golfers an idea of what they've done well and perhaps not so well after the round. Finally, Big-Numbers mode, coupled with the sunlight-readable dial, is great for those whose eyesight maybe isn't what it once was.

Best ball

taylormade Tour response stripe golf ball review

The TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe golf ball lying on the ground

Ideal for those wanting help with alignment

Specifications

Construction: Three-piece
Color: 5

Reasons to buy

+
Strong ball flight
+
Good greenside spin control
+
Clear alignment tool

Reasons to avoid

-
The garish design may distract some

We all know how TaylorMade regularly look to start trends and think outside the box when it comes to technology and golf equipment design, and the Stripe seems to continue this ideology, with a lime green and grey coloured band (other colors available) that wraps around the ball.

This bold look might not be for everyone but we loved it as a striking alternative from TaylorMade. If you are a player that struggles with alignment or getting to roll the ball properly end-over-end then the Stripe is designed to help.

Overall, we really felt that this is an excellent all-round golf ball that offers performance close to the Tour-level models, with a slightly lower price point, hence why it secured a spot in Editor's Choice Awards for 2023.

Nike sizing can be tricky

The Nike Stretch Woven Golf Belt is incredibly stretchy for a comfortable fit on the course. Nike is worn by some of the biggest names in golf, including Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka, with all three men opting to use this belt on a number of outfits in Majors and other Tour events. It comes in several colors to suit any pant design and will keep your trousers well fastened at your waist. I reckon this makes it the ideal small gift to go along with one of the other pieces of apparel in this guide.

Best shoes

Ecco Biom C4 Shoe reviewEditors Choice 2022

The five star Ecco Biom C4 golf shoes

A breathable, lightweight, comfortable golf shoe

Specifications

Sizes: 6-12
Waterproof: 100%
BOA Option?: No
Colors: 4 (White, Navy, White/Black, Grey/Blue)

Reasons to buy

+
Supreme comfort
+
Incredibly soft leather upper
+
All-over breathability
+
Suitable for all feet widths

Reasons to avoid

-
Toe area prone to staining

One of the most technology-packed spikeless golf shoes we've tested, the Ecco Biom C4 seriously impressed us with its overall comfort, grip, style and breathability. It's built nicely on the foundations of the excellent Biom H4 but the new sneaker style has won our hearts from a style perspective, and the performance is there to match.

The Biom C4 uses Ecco's Exhaust Grid technology that scoops fresh air towards the sole of the foot to keep it cool. This, combined with Gore-Tex surround and breathable Ortholite insole, makes this the most breathable shoe by some stretch.

Another excellent touch from Ecco is that the insole is removable to allow for more width in the shoe. This will make the Biom C4 suitable for those with wider feet and there is still the same amount of comfort and cushioning with the first insole removed.

Best speaker

TecTecTec Team8 GPS Speaker Review

The TecTecTec Team8 GPS Golf Speaker fixed on a golf cart

A small, ultra-convenient golf speaker

Specifications

Sound: Directional
Battery: 10 hours

Reasons to buy

+
Great sound quality even when turned up
+
Affordable and has many great features
+
Accurate GPS on an easy to use app

Reasons to avoid

-
Using the same button for several functions can be frustrating

Speakers have become all the rage on the golf course over the last few years and this model is one of our favorites. A small, lightweight speaker that adds a lot of fun to your rounds, this portable model is a great and loud option for anyone who likes to listen to music on the course.

In testing, we felt that the set-up was super easy and stress-free, while we really enjoyed the magnetic clip on its back that you can attach to any metal structure. Once the app is downloaded and connected to your speaker, you can head to the course and use a nearby search to find the course you are playing and begin your round. The app displays yardages to the front, middle and back of greens and while you may not be looking at your phone on the course, a quick press of the button that looks like a flag, will have the speaker momentarily mute the music and read out the yardages to the different segments of the green. Finally it is charged by a USB-C cable and will hold enough battery for two rounds. Such is the quality, we felt it was one of the best golf speakers on the market.

Best cheap laser

Inesis Golf 900 Laser Rangefinder lying on grass

The Inesis 900 Laser Rangefinder

Undoubtedly one of the best value for money rangefinders you can buy

Specifications

Range: 5-1300 yards (flag 350 yards)
Magnification: 6x
Protection: Certified IPX2 (can handle light rain)
Battery life: 5000 measurements

Reasons to buy

+
Superb distance accuracy
+
Comes with slope functionality that can be easily disabled
+
Excellent value for money

Reasons to avoid

-
Lacks the premium appeal of others visually

As our other equipment guides have proven, we have become fans of Inesis gear of late and the same can be said of this rangefinder. Not only is it competitively priced, but this unit boasts a Slope Compensation switch so you can toggle on and off slope-adjusted distances.

We actually put this model up against a more expensive rangefinder (the Bushnell Tour V5 Shift) and we found it more than kept up with accuracy and ease of use. It features a first target priority function that isolates the flag, while measurements are confirmed by vibration and, rather importantly, it is accurate to +/- 1 yard and can measure in both yards or meters.

Finally, you also get 6x magnification, so you get a clear view when looking through the viewfinder and we also liked the weight, particularly the way it sits so well in the hand. Acknowledging all of this, if you, or the golfer in your life, need a laser rangefinder, then we cannot recommend this Inesis model enough, especially because of the undeniable value on offer.

Best cart

Bag Boy Nitron Push CartEditors Choice 2022

The Bag Boy Nitron Push Cart folded out on the golf course

An Editor's Choice Award recipient

Specifications

Weight: 7.6kg
Material: Aluminium
Colors: 7

Reasons to buy

+
Folds down easily and compactly
+
Well thought out storage areas for water bottle and phone
+
Very little bag twisting over rough terrain

Reasons to avoid

-
Wheels perhaps could have been bigger

Do you know someone who insists on walking the golf course? Well, a good push cart is the way forward and one of our top picks is the Nitron from Bag Boy. A model that made our best push carts list due to its simple set-up procedure, lightweight nature and compact build when folded down.

What really impressed us in our testing was the speed at which the patented nitrogen-powered opening mechanism worked. It opens up in one smooth action and then folds closed again just as easily at the end of a round.

Away from the mechanism, it is very lightweight and compact when folded down, which makes it perfect for storing. Also, the Nitron isn't as heavy or bulky as other similar carts on the market and has a number of features which exceed other models. These include an integrated beverage holder, mobile device holder and golf ball storage, handle-mounted parking brake and bungee straps that secure the golf bag with ease, making this incredible value.

+

+
Plenty of strategy-enhancing features
+
Easy to navigate

Reasons to avoid

-
Hole maps could be improved
-
Shorter battery life than Aim W11

This user-friendly, feature-packed golf watch will certainly catch the eye of many players of differing experience levels. The GolfBuddy Aim W12 is an example of the cutting edge features and designs going into some of the best golf watches on the market right now.

Aesthetically, the watch looks a lot slicker than the previous W11 and has certainly been streamlined thanks to the flatter button in the corner. What's more, the face looks to have been blended in better with the the cool looking bezel and it comes with a leather strap as standard. If leather isn't your cup of tea, it also comes with a silicon strap in the box too, which may be more appropriate if you're playing in warmer conditions.

Looking to the touchscreen now, and the display is very bright and reassuringly responsive. The watch will only start displaying distances when you arrive at the first tee which was a little frustrating, but it did show good visuals and a 2D flyover of each hole which provided a good idea of what to expect and allowed us to plan out a strategy. The graphics and maps were very easy to use and you can also measure shot distances with the watch too. Overall, the user experience here was faultless, the watch was quick and easy to grasp and navigate around different screens and metrics. It is also now IPX7 waterproof too, which will provide peace of mind if you ever get caught in the rain.

Best travel bag

Sun Mountain Club Glider Meridian Travel Cover pictured at an airport

A fantastic, lightweight travel bag that moves easily

Specifications

Material: Nylon
Weight: 5.13kgs/11.3lbs

Reasons to buy

+
Legs and wheels are a game changer
+
Outside pockets are spacious
+
Padding at the top end is very thick

Reasons to avoid

-
Can be tricky to put legs/wheels back up

Got a golf trip lined up but still using the same travel bag from decades ago? Well an upgrade is vital, especially if you want to keep your clubs safe and secure when travelling.

This is where the Meridian from Sun Mountain comes in and, just like the name suggests, it simply glides around the airport and takes away any stress from your back, arms and wrists that comes with carrying or trying to maneuever a bag without wheels. The legs are very sturdy and the wheels roll excellently.

The padding around the top of the bag is very thick and should mean that there are no accidents with your driver and fairway woods. The bag also comes with two spacious outside pockets, one on either side, that can easily house jackets, coats, jumpers or anything else you see fit to put in there for easy access. Inside the bag, there are two straps to keep your golf bag secured and there’s enough room for plenty more too. Overall we loved this model and we think you will too.

Best premium set

Callaway XR Package Set Review

An extra special gift for the beginner golfer

Specifications

Clubs: 12
Colors: 1 (Navy/Grey)
Shafts: Graphite Woods/Steel Iron or All Graphite (Regular & Stiff)

Reasons to buy

+
Premium, user-friendly aesthetics
+
Easy to hit through the set
+
Excellent putter

Reasons to avoid

-
Some may prefer a more specialist-looking wedge

What makes this one of the best sets for beginners? Well, Callaway have made these clubs extremely confidence-inspiring at address, with all the models making it as easy as possible to launch into the air.

The first thing to cover is what you get for your money. There are 12 clubs in total ranging from driver to putter. The version we tested featured a 10.5˚ driver, 3-wood and 4-hybrid, then 5-iron to pitching wedge followed by a gap wedge, 55˚ sand wedge and a putter. From a gapping perspective, this composition makes perfect sense and for most golfers, this line-up is more than enough to get you onto the course.

Testing-wise, all are aesthetically pleasing at address and will provide the user with plenty of confidence. The main standout is how large the heads are at address, which is a key principle when it comes to new golfers who are looking to swing at the golf ball. All the clubs have a smart, aspirational aesthetic that isn’t too dissimilar to the Callaway Rogue ST woods and, in the driver, it sits slightly closed. This means that it should fight those with an annoying slice, whilst also being easier to launch. The irons are also unmistakably Callaway and the putter looks fantastic as well.

Reasons to avoid

-
Carry case could offer more protection

The biggest compliment we could pay the Veloce sunglasses is that you genuinely don’t notice you’re wearing them. They weigh just 28g and feature an adjustable nose piece, which helps create a comfortable and secure fit.

They are constructed with matte black Grilamid TR-90 frames which, when we tested them, felt sturdy and well made, plus there’s just enough give in them to ensure they will fit a variety of face sizes. The other benefit of have a little bit of flexibility built in is that they are less likely to snap should they get accidentally knocked or sat on. Thankfully, the Veloce comes with a firm zippered carry case which stores the frame and the other lenses available.

Along with the frames, the lenses are made of a shatterproof polycarbonate and are scratch-resistant. With the slip-resistant rubber arms and robust nylon frame, they are comfortable, secure and will do the vital job of protecting your eyes from harmful UVA and UVB rays. There are even small vents in the lenses to prevent fogging - Tifosi has thought of everything. Overall, these are some of the best golf sunglasses on the market and they don't cost an arm and a leg either, making them an excellent gift.

Best mat for breaking putts

The Breaking Ball Putting Mat

Made by Me and My Golf

Specifications

Length (ft): 7 & 11
Stimpmeter: Around 11

Reasons to buy

+
Great roll and quality balls
+
Brilliant packaging, will last a lifetime

Reasons to avoid

-
A little on the pricey side

We all have an idea of how we putt but have very little real feedback... However, thanks to help from Piers Ward and Andy Proudman, world-renowned PGA professionals who will be familiar to all of us through their online coaching and tips, you can purchase this fascinating bit of kit for the golf fan in your life.

Essentially, the Breaking Ball Putting Mat includes three revolutionary breaking balls and a putting mat. The balls have differently weighted breaks – the green ball has a slight break, the red ball has a medium break and the blue ball has a heavy break - with there also being three mats to choose from – 7.5ft (2.3m), 11ft (3.4m) and 14ft (4.3m).

An important aspect we noticed in testing though was the balls, despite the weights, aren’t clicky and don’t feel alien to other golf balls that you might use on the course and the mat is medium to fast. So it does a pretty good job replicating what we experience on the course. It should also be added that it comes in some excellent packaging, is of very high quality and is easily packed away.
