Just a drive and a wedge from the motorway out of London, Bearwood Lakes is tucked away in a surprisingly tranquil spot.

Still a relative youngster, it offers a delightful course and a clubhouse atmosphere that is relaxed and unstuffy.

Martin Hawtree’s excellent design delivers first-class golf on springy turf through pines, heather and gorse with the view from the clubhouse and large terrace guaranteed to get the golfing juices flowing.

As with most Top 100 courses, there are no weak holes with the 7th a challenging, uphill, dogleg left and probably the toughest hole on the course.

Not a club to rest on its laurels, there have been some recent changes to enhance both the playing characteristics and the visual experience.

The most obvious of these has been to transform what was just a pond between the 8th and 9th into a lake, which means the latter is now a demanding par 3 across water.

There is an excellent halfway house before you encounter new ponds by the 10th green and 11th tee.

The 13th and 14th are effectively a pair of signature holes, both extremely attractive and calling for bold tee shots over the edge of the lake. You may need to call in a favour as the course is members and their guests only.

+ Lovely course that is surprisingly mature for its age
