Having designed nearby Alwoodley, Mackenzie turned his attention to Moortown where he adopted larger, undulating greens more commonly seen on seaside links.

The famous Gibraltar par-3 10th has a sloping plateau green and is the club’s signature hole.

Very much parkland to start with, it is perhaps not until the 12th that one is really aware of a more heathland feel.

In 1929 the course became the first in Europe to host the Ryder Cup, and to this day the Ladies’ section plays annually for their own Ryder Cup, donated by Samuel Ryder in thanks for all their help and support during the event. SP

+ Glorious when in full bloom; pleasing blend of parkland and heathland
– Visitor welcome can be variable; surrounding houses close in places
