The famous County Kerry links is thoroughly deserving of a spot in our top 10.
As the course works closer to the Atlantic from the 6th, you embark on a thrilling journey that will challenge every facet of your game.
One of my favourite things about Ballybunion is just how thoroughly it tests you around the greens.
Many of them are raised with run-offs – especially to the sides – which takes the chip-and-run off the table, leaving you facing delicate shots off tight lies to firm surfaces.
To play to handicap you must either hit the greens or have a masterful touch. A very clever golf course. JE
+ Excellent all-round test; warm, genuine welcome; wonderful setting
- Takes a while to escape the houses; awash with “trophy” golfers at times

Awesome place! From the time you drive down through the village between the course and see it in all its splendour, to pulling up in the carpark and seeing all its surroundings, just awesome! Then as you walk into the plush and 'history filled' clubhouse and look around in 'awe', and wind your way upto the changing rooms for your shoe change, you are just gasping at all its 'specialness!'. The course is awesome too! From the time the starter wishes you well and sets you off, and as you wind down and up through the houses, to the time you start the back nine along the sea front, and then wind up towards the clubhouse, brilliant! The back nine and escpecially the last few finishing holes are of real quality, but found for me that it didn't really sink in, until I was sat down upstairs in the clubhouse having a few beers and some food with the boys overlooking the 18th hole. It was then that I realised how unbelievable it was and how lucky and privledged i'd been to go to such a place. If you get the chance, not cheap, but ok for a one off in a lifetime opportunity.
