Waterville has magnificent visual appeal throughout, and Tom Fazio’s renovation work has meant that certain areas of the links that were once on relatively flat terrain are now blessed with greater definition and contouring.

Since the course is situated on a peninsula, there’s invariably a stunning view to enjoy, whether the ocean or a dramatic mountain backdrop.

It’s a unique and unspoilt place – perhaps not that surprising given how long it takes to get there by road – but it’s absolutely worth the pilgrimage.

As aesthetically pleasing a course as one could ever wish for. SP

+ Beautifully balanced layout; jaw-dropping scenery; very visitor-friendly
- Remote location; potential for a long round with so many visitors

I was lucky enough earlier this year to go to Ireland and play a handful of quality courses; Ballybunion Old, Tralee, Waterville and Kilheen, and this was my second most favourite course of them all. Owned by Americans, so as you can imagine run and maintained to the highest quality, from the golf to the food! It sumed it up for me, when upon our arrival and going in through the reception area and then out into a courtyard towards the pro-shop, a helicopter came flying in and landed on the helipad, bringing some 'celeb' in for a round! Awesome course, terrifically set out, with some real beautiful and quality winding and testing holes! Thoroughly challenging yet enjoyful set out. A must, in for your in this part of the world.
