The course at Brancaster is situated on magical, almost mystical marshland and is an excellent example of an entirely natural links.
Due to the tides, the club is often cut off, but this just lends to the feeling of seclusion and splendid isolation.
Bunkers faced with large wooden sleepers are an impressive feature as are the ever-present views over the tidal marshes where only the birdlife breaks the tranquillity.
The 8th and 9th demand carries over tidal water and are excellent strategic holes. The overall atmosphere is very much one of stepping back in time. RS
+ Unique parcel of linksland; charming old-school atmosphere
- Two-ball only; greenkeeping compound on the course a bit of an eyesore

A group of us have been making an annual Autumnal pilgrimage to Brancaster for the last 35 years. The contrast with the tree-lined calm of Wimbledon Park could not be more stark; and therein lies the attraction and the challenge which is ever-changing. The linksland certainly has a mystical quality: the course itself has a touch of the primeval about it -- this is golf at its most natural best. The greens are firm and demand brave putting; the fairways encourage clean striking and the strategically placed bunkers -- well, you don't want to go there! One hole, the relatively new 13th, is disappointing but all the others test your course management and creativity. The 'go for it' attitude of 30 years ago has now been tempered for the senior golfer by a more strategic approach but with no let-up in enjoyment. And the old-world traditional clubhouse, with local fish and chips (and chocolate cake) to die for, provides the perfect finish to an exhilarating golfing experience.
