The Ryder Cup has made the Brabazon one of England’s most famous tracks, but its condition hasn’t always inspired and some regard it – a little unfairly - as a two-hole course.

I’m pleased to report much has now changed for the better. The redesigned 6th has become a worthy rival to the 10th and 18th, while improvements to the 11th have elevated a tame hole into something more substantial.

Most impressive of all, it was in immaculate condition on my visit, despite a dousing from above in the run-up.

The Brabazon has its doubters, but its entry into our top 100 is fully justified. JE

+ Several very dramatic holes; memorable association with Ryder Cup
- Pricey green fees; not enough outstanding holes; noise from motorway
