"Blown upon by mighty winds, breeder of mighty champions," is how Bernard Darwin described Royal Liverpool, and looking at the prevailing weather conditions and list of Hoylake winners it's hard to disagree with him. The course is uncompromising in the extreme. Ill-conceived or weakly executed shots are punished severely and when the wind is whipping in off the Dee this is not a place for the faint-hearted. Major bunker works, the introduction of areas of ‘broken ground' and a new 17th green in the last two years keep this links up with the competition.
Panellists' comments: "Hoylake has a special feel that can only be experienced in the flesh"; "Not the prettiest but is there tougher?"

On a very cold November morning we set foot on the hallowed turf of the Royal Liverpool golf course. It is funny it is called the Royal Liverpool considering it is to be found on the Wirral pennisula. We stood on the 1st dreaming of all the greats that had gone before us, Woods, De Vicenzo, Thomson, Hagen, Herd and Hilton. My playing partner flipped a coin to decide who would have the honour, "Oh no, It's me!!!!"! I hope I don't top it or hit it out of bounds. Down the middle they both flew just short of the 200 yd mark, A1 postion. No crowds clapping, just the quiet satisfaction we are playing a open championship course. By the 3rd hole we both began to relax and take more notice of our surroundings; the course is surprisingly flat and unusual. Good shots are rewarded and stray shots will have you sratching your head and struggling. As we approached the turn we were slowly working out the lightening fast manicured contoured greens, even in November, and working out we had only lost 2 balls between us. By the time we reached the 12th with its stunning views across the river Dee to North Wales a weather front was moving in. The hail and snow started to fall at pace and the course now started to resemble Val d'Isere ski resort. "oh no! was that lightening i saw?" At this point I was looking for my one iron to hold above my head, as even God cannot hit a one iron! We sadly had to call it a day and trudged back to the magnificent clubhouse and the 19th to have a look at the club's history and memorabillia, which is second only to St. Andrews. Two pots of tea and wonderful home made eccles cakes rounded off a memorable day. The Royal is a serious golf course and a must for any golfer. The review does not end here; the professional had decided due to the unprecedented weather conditions the course had become unplayable and we were given a vouncher for a free round of golf. I'm already looking forward to my next visit and using my one iron, ha ha.
