The only course in Ireland to have hosted the Open, Royal Portrush plays out over an awe-inspiring area of duneland on the wild Antrim coast. The 5th is a fabulous par 4 out to a green above the beach, with the 14th, Calamity, a peerless yet bunkerless par 3. Seven new championship tees have recently been built to further strengthen the test.

Panellists' comments: "An exhilarating test"; "Weak opening and closing holes, but the other 16 are truly magnificent"

Actually I think the first and 18th holes are really good.

The first has out of bounds left and right and on a windy day its a really good feeling when you ball gets on the fairway , the approach has a 'hell' bunker to the left which draws anything short and too long puts you into the deceptively pretty bushes at the back.

18 might look straightforward , but those bunkers around the green have a real ability to catch anything not right at the centre of the green and off the back tees with any wind it is two good hits to make it.

4th one of golfs best driving holes
5th one of golf's prettiest holes
14th name 'calamity' one of the hardest par 3's
15th named 'purgatory' - just once you thought you had got over 14 , this remarkably easy looking hole gets its names from the scores accomplished!.

Brilliant course - should be in the top 5, itsw currently rated 12 in the world by a number of USA publications.

Lets hope an Open tournament can make there soon.

This is an awesome course, but one that you need to both be on top of your game and have 100% concentration 100% of the time, otherwise it will bite you! Loved it though, but is by far the most difficult course I have ever played.
On the front nine I was hitting drivers and 3 woods from the tees, and most of them were not that waywood and actually found the fairways. However, there are alot of bumps and hollows towards the edges of the fairways that run towards the rough, and yes you've guessed it, my balls just seemed to keep finding them and then they would either bounce straight off into the rough or just rolling into it.
It looked rather innocuous at the time and I thought they'd bee ok to find, but yes wrong again, lost quite a few balls on the front nine and omnly scored 5 points. Then however, I used a different approach on the back 9, hitting 3,4 and 5 irons from the tee, the balls then miracuously staying in play, and resulting in me scoring 15 points on the back 9! So there you are a great course and worth a punt if you get a chance! Richard
