Golf at Lahinch began in 1894. Old Tom Morris made improvements in 1897 but it was Alister MacKenzie who created the course largely still in play today. Between 1999 and 2003 Martin Hawtree completed a renovation project to bring the rugged and imposing links into line with the modern game. There are still plenty of idiosyncrasies, but that's half its appeal.

Panellists' comments: "A special links experience, set in a beautifully remote part of Ireland"; "Unconventional to say the least"

I played here three years ago with an american visitor and a canadian visitor - both had caddies. That was my first lesson because I spent more time on my own than with my playing partners who were 50 yards ahead of me. A fantastic course with good facilities. We had wind, rain, sun etc. I finished weakly but played to my handicap so I was very pleased. A couple of blind shots but generally one could see where one was going. I can't wait to play it again.

I have played Lahinch three times, and every time was absolutely thrilling. Compared to the other wonderful links on Ireland's west coast, Lahinch is just amazing or its brutal, intimidating beauty. To me, this course looks like an amazing test of golf, for the blind shots, the natural elements (wind, sea, dunes, the rough) which make it simply one of the most stunning, challenging, untameable courses that I have ever played. Nothing can be ever taken fro granted, here, there is no relaxing shot, no easy hole. They are all incredible, purely blissful. It's a great joy to be playing on this course.
