Cleveland HiBore XLS driver review

With separate Draw and Tour models available, Cleveland's streamline XLS driver is available in three different versions. The sleek head design promises high levels of distance and forgiveness.

Design and Tech Benefits
The new XLS driver is available in not one, not two but three versions – Standard, Draw and Tour. All boast faces 17% larger than their HiBore XL predecessor, with significantly increased moments of inertia for extra stability thanks to heel and toe "stability foils" that increase perimeter weighting. The Draw model is offset with extra heel-biased weighting to counter slice tendencies, while the Tour model has toe-biased weighting and an open face angle for a more neutral set-up and greater scope to manoeuvre the ball.
Golf Monthly Verdict
The standard model we tested had a very solid feel off the face that was accompanied by a pretty loud impact sound. Over the ball, the head actually looked a little more compact than the size of its soleplate suggested.

I've hit both the XL (10.5) and XLS (9.5) and find the XLS an improvement in terms of feel, which is slightly softer off the face in the XLS. I found the ball flight to be higher than one would anticipate, with the XLS looking more like I am used to from 10.5 and not the 9.5 that it is. Originally the XLS had the stiff red Fuji, which I found very heavy. I switched to the Adilda NV stiff I had in the XL and like it much more. All in all, an excellent club that flies a long way. Make sure you tee it up high though; it must be the extra moi, but I cannot swing through close to the ground with it.
