Mizuno MX-700 driver review
Review Date: 20th March 2009
Design and Tech Benefits
The Mizuno MX-700 driver has a new titanium-face design which gives more distance on off-centre strikes when compared with the previous MX-500 model. The high-pitched noise of the MX-500 has been replaced with a powerful 'thump'. The head is large and inspiring and would benefit those losing serious distance on slight mishits.

Golf Monthly Verdict
While the head of the Mizuno MX-700 driver looks huge at address the graphics on the crown and the shape work brilliantly together. It felt extremely solid on every shot-something which is helped by the improved impact sound.

Had a go with this 'Big Dog' yesterday at a demo day. ( I should first say that I had never even considered a Mizuno club before being a confirmed Ping fan). I had to be persuaded by the Mizuno rep. to give the driver a try and compare it on the TrackMan radar against my current driver. WOW!!! This thing only wanted to go straight and was so easy to use. After a few hits it was suggested I try one of the optional shafts (Aldila) and this obviously suited me even better. Bottom line? - I was hitting a much tighter dispersion and gained an average 25 yards. My only problem is hiding the bill from the wife but at a price of well under £200 for a club of this quality I can live with the pain.

I currently own a Burner Tour TP model with upgraded shaft and have been hitting it really well, I attended the Mizuno Road Show at Hensol Academy last Thursday and had a go on their TrackMan system, 5 shots with my Burner and 5 with the MX 700, without looking at the results I was very impressed with the MX 700, every shot was solid, even with a toe or heal stike the ball flew long and quite straight. The results on the TrakMan showed an average of 17 yards longer with the MX 700. I had another 30 mins to make sure that the first 5 shots were not down to luck, I continued to hit the ball really solid and long, I also tried a 3 wood and was even more impressed, hitting straight off the mat, just could not miss, needless to say I ordered 9.5 Driver and 3 wood, both fitted with Grafolly Pro Launch Red shaft, £179 and £99 respectively, incredible when I paid well over £350 for the Burner. If Mizuno continue with Drivers like this the will not simply be known for their irons, can't wait to take delivery of my new toys and get on the course.

If you have already read reviews about the MX700 then it will come as no surprise that I write in praise of this club. I have yet to see a poor review so it seems that Mizuno really have found a club that has a very wide appeal.
OK, I am not sure about the graphics on the crown of the driver but it is surprising how little you notice this when teeing it up for real and concentrating on the back of the golf ball - so do not let this put you off.
This club is all about the quality of the strike, and being very forgiving it seems you can get this quality anywhere off the face. The ball fairly soars away and, most importantly, it is so accurate. Can you imagine the confidence this builds when you feel you are bound to hit the fairway?
At sub £200 this may well be the best value driver ever. Just dont settle for the first one you try (in spite of probable impressive results) as you might gain even more from one of the other shaft options on offer.

Why do your reviewers never give their handicaps, are they all scratch players ? I am always very sceptical about claims that you can suddenly hit the ball 25 yards further, to do this there must be a considerable increase in your swing speed. Is this possible simply by changing your driver ? I don't think so, I think these reviews are done by the sellers of the club.

Don, most of the GM Test Team are off single figures. John Jacobs (Top 25 Coach and professional) also tests some of the gear, but between them they will test most of the new equipment hitting the shelves. We feel they're more than well qualified to reviews the products.

Having read Don's comments on the 4 May I felt I had to add mine, I am a 7 handicap who has recently purchased a Mizuno MX700 and it does exactly what it says on the tin, it's longer and straighter than my Taylormade R9, it has increased my tee shots by an average of 30 yards.

Thank you Frank. People like Don just need to go out there and try it for himself. I'm a 24 handicap who was fading almost every drive off the tee. I needed something else and decided to give the MX 700 a go together with my new set of MX 200 irons. Trust me I've never hit a ball straighter in my life, and yes I've gained about 30 yards. Best driver I've ever hit. My previous one was a Callaway Hyper X wich was good but not as long. Go and try it Frank, You'll buy one yourself. Greetings from a sunny South Africa.

I won golfer of the year at my club this year (Connemara), so decided to treat myself to some equipment upgrades. I was hitting my Mx500 really well (even off the floor on par 5s), so decided to try the Mx700. The 700 is 9.5 degree but is straighter and more forgiving than the 10.5 degree 500 and its 10 to 15 yards longer. (And I'm still able to hit it off the deck even with a 9.5 degree head, its easier than the 500 actually). At first I wasn't that impressed with the club, but experimented with some different ball heights on the tee and found that when I teed up 1/2 inch lower the ball was exploding off the face of the club. It seems that the sweet spot is lower on the face than most drivers. Swingweight and balance of the club is just superb. It just feels "right". Lovely club and highly recommended. (But try teeing the ball "low" if you don't get the results you are looking for, seems to work for this club).
