Design and Tech Benefits

The milled, flat face of the Wilson Staff 8882 putter promotes consistent strike, while secondary grooves provide forward spin and reduced skid.

Golf Monthly Verdict

The Wilson 8882 has a classic
head shape and traditional look. Although the grooves might help
the ball roll consistently, this is definitely
not for those who struggle on short putts.

A sleek, classic putter that will catch the eye of traditionalists. No extra stability, so only
for extremely confident putters.

I am co-author of "Getting a Good Read," a book of golf poems that Golf Monthly reviewed in June 2002 (p. 15). While I agree with your positive comments in that review :0) -- and thank you for them, I disagree with some points made in your review of the Wilson Staff 8882. For example, Golf Monthly's review states: "Although the grooves might help the ball roll consistently, this is definitely not for those who struggle on short putts." As another perspective, I have struggled with short putts throughout my 49 years playing the game, but with the 8882, my percentages with short putts have improved dramatically. Indeed, I've not felt so much confidence on short putts before. In fact, I've actually begun to enjoy them -- even look forward to them.

A related comment from your review: "No extra stability, so only for extremely confident putters." Perhaps for some, but for me, this 8882 ranks among the most stable, if not the most stable, of putters I have used. The club has a solidity and clarity -- an elegant reliability that one feels first when lining up the putt. The absence of offset, the clear line of the face, and the sightline as well -- all create a clarity that I appreciate a great deal. Additionally, the feel of the putt through the hands is in complete accord with the above mentioned clarity -- solid and exceedingly pleasurable.

These are not the impressions of one who has just arrived to this putter. I have been using it for at least four months now -- and, in all honesty, have never putted better. The clarity of set-up and feel combine to create a very accurate and effective putting experience, as demonstrated in my own increased confidence, enjoyment and significantly reduced number of putts per round.

Sometimes a straight, solid, well-made blade like this -- including, of course, the face milling and its benefits -- can be as effective at set-up and also delivery as the other highly-prized and "priced" so-called modern forgiving models -- indeed, in my experience, more so. I cannot think of another putter on the market that provides as satisfactory an experience -- for my game, at least.

While I may disagree with some points, I thank the reviewer for the honest views -- and also wish all the best to Golf Monthly, a magazine I have enjoyed here in the U.S. for years.
