Day becomes world no. 1 after BMW win with TaylorMade M1 driver

Golf is easy, right? That’s exactly how the new world no.1 Jason Day makes it look when he’s firing drives down the fairway and holing out for fun.

Another win for Day at the BMW Championship, his fourth in his last six events, sent him to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings.

Rory McIlroy moves back down to second, with Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler all close behind.

The FedEx Cup seems to be within touching distance for the Australian, particularly when he’s dominating like he did at Conway Farms.

It’s worth noting, however, that his six-shot victory was achieved with the use of a new driver – the M1 from TaylorMade

The latest release from the brand made its way into Day’s bag, replacing the R15 model he had been previously using.

Day’s current club is a 10.5° M1 with a Mistubishi Rayon KuroKage Silver TiNi 70X shaft.

On Thursday, after shooting -10 in Illinois, Day said: “To be honest, I’m hitting it longer than my R15, which is fantastic.

“Just the whole setup, the whole makeup of the driver, with it being a little bit lighter, with the carbon insert on top.”

Day, who won the USPGA Championship at Whistling Straights, is currently T3 in the longest drive leaderboard on Tour; he hit driver 409 yards at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

In average driving distance, Day is third, behind Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson. The Australian averages 314.5 yards off the tee, compared to Johnson’s 318.6 yards.

Day also added after Thursday’s round: “When you’ve got the same launch angle, carrying a little bit further with a lower down angle and less spin, it’s going to bounce and roll.

“It’s just a perfect makeup right now. It’s kind of like that honeymoon stage of putting something new in the bag. I’m excited about it.”

The M1 will again feature for Day at the final FedEx Cup event, the Tour Championship by Coca-Cola.
