Two new TaylorMade RSi irons – which feature Face Slots to complement returning speed pocket technology – are on sale, with a third following in January 2015.

RSi 1 and RSi 2 are in golf shops now, with the TP model arriving mid-January.

These slots – featured on the RSi 1, RSi 2 and RSi TP models – sit on the face of the irons, either side of the grooves.

TaylorMade may have made a name for itself over the last few years for eeking out extra distance for its tour professionals, but its latest irons launch is all about increasing performance on mishits for average golfers.

These Face Slots (below), which feature in the 3-8 irons, help provide uniform flexing across the face to generate more consistent distance on off-centre hits.

In real terms, it means if you hit a loose shot you should find yourself closer to the green, with a better chance of an up-and-down.

All three Taylormade RSi irons also feature modified speed pockets in the 3-7 irons, which are designed to promote higher ball speeds on shots that come low off the face.

Increased ball speeds accross the entire face, coupled with a higher launch angle, should lead to longer carries on all shots.

The RSi 1 (below – £699 steel and £799 graphite) has the biggest head of the three models to give game improvers more confidence over the ball.

It has a deep undercut and Inverted Cone Technology to drive face speed, while multiple dampening systems improve sound and feel.

The RSi 2 (below – £829 steel and £929 graphite) boasts many similarities to the RSi 1 – including the improved speed pocket and new Face Slots – while featuring some points of difference.

The RSi 2s have forged faces in the short irons and tungsten weighting in the long irons for improved feel and forgiveness.

The head is also smaller, and likely to be preferred by better players.

The third RSi addition – the TP model – will be available in 2015.

It will feature a two-piece welded construction that includes a forged carbon steel face and hosel and a stainless steel back bar, as well as speed pocket and Face Slot technology.

As you’d expect, the TP irons (price TBC) will have a compact head size, minimal offset and thin toplines.
