Get into the perfect impact position

Graeme Storm

The perfect impact position

It goes without saying that finding a good impact position lies at the heart of a consistently solid long game. Any detrimental moves at this crucial stage (like losing your height or leaning back on your right side) can have a catastrophic effect on the quality of your striking.

One drill that I use to help me create the ideal impact position is to hit a series of chip shots with a mid iron. By shortening the swing it’s easier to find the position you are after when you make a full swing. Make a mini version of your full swing – as you hit the ball ensure that your weight is moving onto your left side (above) and that your spine angle remains as it was at address. Your right heel should lift off the ground as you make your way through the downswing.

This simple drill will help you break your swing down enabling you to construct the perfect impact position.
