Golf tips: Learning a pre-shot routine to putt under pressure
Have you ever heard of a pre-shot routine? Of course you have, but do you have one? When Rory McIlroy holed out for par from four feet on the last to win his first European Tour title at the Dubai Desert Classic in February, the Ulsterman demonstrated all the technical and mental qualities needed to overcome a tricky putt. We caught up with McIlroy at Brocket Hall Golf Club to get some putting tips.
Rory McIlroy: Developing a pre-shot routine is essential for anyone who wants to make a good score under pressure. In practice, when the pressure is off, take time to groove the routine. I like to line the ball up with the hole, I then set my address position and make two practice swings. I take one last look at the hole before pulling the trigger. This simple, pre-shot routine will help you switch into auto pilot when the pressure mounts.

Mental: Improve your focus on the green

It's nice to know that i've got something in common with the (young) man with one of the very best swings in the business! I have exactly the same pre putting shot routine... :o)
Asides from that, i also had a putting lesson with my pro as even with the routine i was always missing left. One thing missing from that description is also to keep focused on the ball through the swing and not follow the putter head during the practice swings, as this makes you dizzy and fall over!
Nice wee article and it's the small things like this that will help people like me improve at this crazy game!
