The in-to-out drill with Simon Khan

Simon Khan in-to-out

Simon Khan demonstrating the in-to-out drill

The key to hitting a controlled draw is to groove an in-to-out downswing, for many this is also the hardest part to master. You can develop this in practice by using the following drill. Put two tees in the ground about half a yard apart, directly in-line with your target. Place your ball between them as shown (I’ve also place the shaft of another club on the ground in line behind the tees to act as another visual guide). Now hit a normal shot. If the path of your swing is in-to-out you should only hit the tee closest to the target - missing the first tee on the inside. As long as the clubface is square to the target through impact you’ll find the crucial right to left sidespin that will result in a controlled draw.
