If playing consistently solid golf is on your wish list then it's important to lay the foundations during the off-season. My one-hour practice routine will polish your game ready for tournament golf.
1. The Grip
Buy a new glove and draw lines. The lines you can see here (image) mark where the club should sit in your left hand. The line drawn on the top of the thumb should point towards your right ear. Hit plenty of shots with your hand in this position and it will start to feel comfortable as your accuracy improves.
2. Solid Stance
Your ball position and the width of you stance are the next crucial aspects of your technique. To help with this, mark on a ruler the width of your stance for three key clubs. With a driver in hand the ball should sit more towards the line of your left foot, but with a 7-iron and edge, the ball must be in the middle of your stance.
3. Perfect Posture
Get a feel for good posture by taking your stance without the club. Keep your back straight and move your upper body over the ball by bending from your hips. Now let your arms hang down naturally. Keep this posture from address to impact.
4. Video your Swing
Ask a friend to video your swing. With the previous steps nailed, this video will be your blueprint for a solid technique. Every time your struggling on the course, watch the video. It will remind you the key components of a solid technique.
5. Use a notebook
A notebook is very helpful, by noting down any drills, or swings thoughts that have helped you hit the ball better. Record your progress and will give you evidence that the hard work is paying off. This season the book will be worth its weight in gold.
