Landing Zones

making sure that you pick a landing spot, for your ball to then release down/up towards the hole

One of the keys to becoming a successful chipper is being able to pick a spot where you want the ball to land and pitching it in the chosen area. If you can do this consistently you should be able to deal with any chip shot you are faced with.

A great way of enhancing this visualisation as well as improving your technique is to use mouse mats on the chipping green. Take three mouse mats and position them three different distances between you and the hole. Then take your wedges and work on a variety shots which will pitch the ball onto the mouse mats and roll out next to the cup. Approach each shot as you would out on the course; see it, feel it (with a practice swing) and play it.
