Having sat in a stand by the 16th green and 17th tee I enjoyed a close view of loads of The Open contenders.

Paul Casey and Lee Westwood made gritty long two-putt pars. Miguel Angel Jimenez made an excellent long range birdie after taking an age over his approach shot, while GM columnist Graeme Mcdowell also  made an excellent birdie on his way to 68.

However one person’s performance on this small stretch of golf was not so impressive. Sergio Garcia who has so many fans let himself down. Having taken an age to decide which club to hit into 16 he ended up short right, his reaction to this… a club throw which flew through the air and into his caddie’s back.

From someone who has thousands of fans and many of them children, it was very disappointing to watch, but it didn’t stop there. Having got up and down on 16 by holing a 20-footer he then ripped his drive down the middle of the 17th fairway. His reaction to this, a smash of his bag with the butt of his club.

Sergio found his way into people’s hearts with the amazing performance and attitude at the 1999 PGA Championship. Perhaps it’s time someone reminded him of why he has so many fans and why he used to love golf.

I hope someone does that quickly before his fans and Major-winning potential goes forever.
