100th playing of the Carnegie Shield

On August 11th 2013 the 100th playing of the Carnegie Shield will take place at Royal Dornoch Golf Club.

The shield has been played for annually as an open amateur competition in early August since the inaugural presentation in 1901.  

Originally played as a 36 hole nett stroke play event with a handicap limit of 6, after some years it became an 18 hole scratch match play competition with 16 qualifiers decided by 36 holes medal play.

In 1929, the competition changed and the format was instituted with 32 qualifiers being decided through 36 holes of medal play with the 16 lowest playing for the Shield as a scratch event and 16 qualifying for a separate handicap event.

In 1960, a high handicap section was added, so the week's competition produced 3 winners - Carnegie Shield, Davidson Trophy and the E.C. Fraser Trophy.

In 1979, with the increasing popularity of the Carnegie Shield week, the event altered from 16 to 32 qualifiers for each section and since this change the competition week now stretches from Sunday to Saturday with a usual field of 250 in total.

On Monday evening, the 12th August, there will be a Champions Dinner. This will be followed by a reception to give all competitors in the tournament the opportunity to meet past winners.

There will be a special exhibition match played over the 1st, 2nd, and 18th holes on Finals day, Saturday the 17th, by past Champions that are no longer able to play in the full tournament.
