England win Girls’ Home Internationals

England beat Wales 7-2 at Panmure, near Carnoustie, to win the Girls’ Home Internationals and claim the Stroyan Cup for the first time in three years

The result, compiled in pouring rain, completed a 3-0 clean sweep for the team in the week s matches. Earlier, the girls had beaten Ireland 6-3 and Scotland 6½-2½.

The victory underlines the tremendous form of the England girls this season. Less than a month ago they won the silver medal at the European girls team championships at Murcar Links, also in Scotland.

It s absolutely fantastic and they are absolutely delighted, they are jumping around, said team captain Julie Brown. They have outplayed everyone and all the other captains and coaches have commented on the standard of play.

I am so proud of them all and not just for the golf. Their behaviour has been so good and they have played everything in the right spirit.

The team gave themselves the best possible start on the final day when they won all three foursomes.

Then, in an action replay of the second day s match, English champion Hannah Barwood and Holly Clyburn speedily secured the victory with very comfortable singles wins.

Hannah won four holes in a row from the 12th for her 5/3 victory, while Holly was six up after eight and closed out her opponent on the 13th.

Kelly Tidy and Rachel Connor sealed the scoreline with their victories. Neither player was behind at any stage in their matches.
