GB&I Walker Cup team announced

Matthew Fitzpatrick, fresh off his win in the US Amateur Championship, is one of seven English players included in this year's GB&I Walker Cup team.

Players such as Amateur champion Garrick Porteous, English champion Callum Shinkwin, Welshman Rhys Pugh and Irishmen Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan have all been selected for the event at the National Golf Links of America in New York.

The remaining four Englishmen are as follows; Nathan Kimsey, Neil Raymond, Max Orrin and Jordan Smith.

The Walker Cup takes place on American soil this year at the National Golf Links of America in Southampton, New York, and the Great Britain & Ireland team will be looking to defend their title after their win at Royal Aberdeen in 2011.

Captain Nigel Edwards believes that this years team is 'strong', and that it 'includes some of the best amateur players in the world.'

All players have in depth experience of the highest levels of the amateur game, and they will all be ready for the challenge that awaits them in New York.

The scene looks to be set for what should be an excellent match, with players such as Fitzpatrick - who has already had an outstanding year, winning the silver medal as leading amateur at The Open Championship at Muirfield - in good form.

Shinkwin has also had an excellent season, having beaten Fitzpatrick in the English Amateur Championship 36-hole final at Frilford Heath.
