£400,000 is needed to complete the film, starring Richard Coyle.

A crowdfunding campaign has been launched to help finance a new film touted as the ‘Rocky of Golf.’

Dream On, based on John Richardson’s best-selling book Dream On: One Hacker’s Challenge to Break Par in a Year, was half-way through filming when one of the backers went bankrupt.

Producer Mark Pegg, formerly of Eastenders, is hoping to raise £400,000 in order to complete filming.

Pegg said: “I read John’s book because I was, and still am, a bad golfer – hoping to find that magic moment.

“I thought the book was fantastic and the more I read, the more it started to lend itself to a film.”

The campaign to raise money has been launched on Indiegogo, with a number of rewards available to those who help out. Among the incentives are golf lessons from Richardson and the chance to appear as an extra in the film.

The film centres on the true story of a man from Northern Ireland hoping to play a level par round within a year. He is told by Sam Torrance to “Dream on.”

Torrance has a cameo in the film, directed by Farren Blackburn, who won a BAFTA for his work on supernatual drama The Fades. Blackburn also recently worked on the Netflix series Daredevil.

He said: “Mark brought John’s story to my attention and asked me to have a read and see if I felt there was a film in it.

“It didn’t take me long to realise that absolutely there was a movie in it – it’s a heart-warming, triumph-of-the-underdog story with a romantic comedy element to it.”

Filming has taken place at Elstree Studios, where Star Wars and The King’s Speech have also been filmed.
