The first Surrey Christian Golf Cup was staged at Sunbury Golf Centre, Shepperton on Sunday 27 July.
The event is part of a series of 3 regional competitions (Essex and West Midlands) with the winners qualifying for the National Christian Golf Cup Final on 28/29 September at Hellidon Lakes Golf Club, Northamptonshire, hosted by the Christian Golf Society.
The winners of the National Final which will be a pairs Stableford Competition will enjoy a holiday at the fabulous Spring Harvest Holiday Camp in Le Pas Opton, France courtesy of the prize sponsors Spring Harvest Holidays.
Ken Lisney and Alan Cooper from the Vine Church in Sevenoaks came third with a combined Stableford score of 71. Dave Holmes and Mark Blythe from Molesey Community Church(MCC) finished just 1 point behind the eventual winners Mark Davies and Mickey Simmonds, also from MCC. Davies and Simmonds won with a total of 73 points. Mark Davies had the best round of the day, a 2 under par 66, with Lesley Blythe of MCC, scoring most points with 40.
Mickey Simmonds(MCC) won the nearest the pin and Marion Gatland the longest drive. Marion wisely choosing accuracy as well as distance as the men just went for distance and crept off the fairway!
By winning the Surrey Cup, Mark & Mickey will now be able to defend the National Christian Golf Cup that they won last year at the final in Essex 2007.
The guests were treated to bacon rolls on arrival, a great day of golf with new friendships being formed. After the action the prize giving ceremony took place over a meal together with all competitors. The subject of the after dinner debate was Do miracles still happen today – and not just on the golf course?. This was led with a short talk by one of the winning pair Mark Davies of MCC.
Organiser Mark Blythe said, There were loads of interesting questions raised about Miracles by Christians and their playing partners alike. The debate was enjoyed by all. Blythe continued to say. It was a great day of Golf, lets hope the Surrey contingent can bring back the National Cup again for us this year. We want to welcome more entries from churches across the region in 2009.
Other churches from Surrey and the surrounding counties are invited to enter the competition next year and should contact Mark Blythe on 020 8979 1452 for more information or log on to www.christiangolfsociety.org.uk.
