Bernhard Langer Eyes Eighth Senior Major

The Senior Open Championship presented by Rolex gets underway today at Carnoustie, where Bernhard Langer is hoping to win his third senior major title of 2016 and match the record of eight senior major titles set by Jack Nicklaus.

Since turning 50 in 2007, Langer’s record in seniors golf has been peerless: 28 wins on the PGA Tour Champions, seven major titles, seven money list titles and three season-ending Charles Schwab Cup titles.

The German golfer, now 58, leads the Charles Schwab Cup rankings coming into the Senior Open having already won three times in 2016, including a pair of senior major titles in the Regions Tradition in May and in the Senior Players Championship last month.

And Carnoustie is a course with happy memories for Langer as it was here in the 2010 Senior Open where Langer claimed the first of his senior majors.

“These milestones are a by-product of always trying to get better and working on your game,” Langer told Golf Monthly before the first round got underway.

“I always do the best I can. It is amazing that only Jack Nicklaus has won one more senior major than Hale Irwin and I have won so far. I could catch Jack and maybe even surpass him one day – that would be amazing.

“These records are a motivating factor and they prove that I have played some very good golf over the past eight or nine years on the Champions Tour.”

Another milestone Langer has reached this year is 100 professional wins, which came at the Regions Tradition. The Senior Players was win number 101.

“Just to have won 100 tournaments as a professional worldwide is an amazing number,” says Langer.

“Not many get there. To have won two majors already this year is also incredible and we are only half way through the season. It has been a wonderful start to the year.”

Langer is the man to beat this week. A golfer of unerring consistency, he has finished in the top-10 in all of the last 14 senior major championships.
