Calcavecchia wins PODS Championship

Former Open champion Mark Calcavecchia fought hard to win the 13th title of his career at Innisbrook's Copperhead Course.

After a first round of 75, Mark Calcavecchia was packed and ready to leave the PODS Championship ? but on Sunday evening he was celebrating the 13th win of his career.

A second round of 67 on the tough Copperhead Course at the Innisbrook Resort in Florida meant that the 45-year-old made the cut. He followed this up with a course record-equalling 62 which tied him for the lead with Heath Slocum. Despite bogeying two of the last three holes on Sunday, Calcavecchia?s final round of 70 was good enough for victory.

Slocum looked likely to at least force a play-off but on the last hole left a 25ft birdie putt for the win short and then missed from four feet for par. John Senden finished with a 66 to tie for second with Slocum on nine under.

The victory was Calcavecchia?s first since the 2005 Canadian Open. He picked up a cheque for $954,000 which took him past $20 million in career earnings.
