David Howell's Tip of the Week

If you are heading out onto the course this weekend, it's crucial that you hole a few putts to ensure a respectable score – especially in this wind! Our Playing editor David Howell takes you through his favourite drill

If you are looking to shoot a good score this weekend you?ll need to hole your share of putts outside 5ft. Gaining a good feel for the pace of the greens is crucial.

To hone this skil,l either in practice or immediately before going to the course, I use the following drill. I find a straight 12ft putt that is slightly downhill and I place three tees behind the hole as shown. The aim here is to ensure the ball reaches the hole without rolling past the tees.

Once I?ve hit six putts from this position I then move to the opposite side of the hole and start the same drill again, putting uphill. By hitting six more 12-footers up the slope I start to gain a natural feel for the pace of the greens.
