Dustin Johnson overhauled J.B. Holmes and Bubba Watson to win the WGC – Cadillac Championship over the Blue Monster at Trump National in Florida.

Johnson began the final round five shots off the lead, but an excellent final round of 69 saw him claim his first victory since his return to the sport from a six-month break.

“It’s been a tough road but a really good one. A lot of really great things came out of it, my son, me and my wife are doing great….it just feels awesome to get that ‘W’. I played great today,” he said.

“I knew I was really good. I just knew there was something that I was missing that could make myself great. I have really been working hard on that and I think it’s working right now.

“I’m so excited right now I can hardly talk. It feels great and it’s definitely by far my best victory.”

54-hole leader J.B Holmes struggled on the final day. He made three bogeys in his first seven holes, while Bubba Watson fired four early birdies to take the lead.

But Watson’s charge faded on the back nine. Three bogeys on the run for home meant the two-time Masters champion had to settle for third place, one behind Holmes who took second.

Henrik Stenson was the best placed European in a tie for fourth with Adam Scott. Rory McIlroy finished as the top Brit. The World Number 1 took a tie for ninth place.
