J.B. Holmes and Harris English lead the Farmers Insurance Open by a shot going into the final round at Torrey Pines in San Diego, California.

Holmes fired a 68 to join English at the top of the leaderboard. The big-hitting Kentuckian birdied all but one of the par-5s over the South Course at Torrey Pines to post the best score of the day, (matched by Scott Stallings and Carlos Ortiz.)

“This golf course is a big, ball-striking course,” Holmes said. “So you’ve got to hit it in the fairway, you’ve got to hit some good shots and give yourself a chance for some birdies. … The rough, it probably plays worse than it did at the U.S. Open when they had it here in 2008.”

English had led on his own through 36-holes, and briefly stretched his advantage to three shots. But he suffered a double-bogey at the 4th then, late in the round, a bogey at the 16th saw him drop back into a tie with Holmes. English finished with a one-over-par 73.

“It’s a battle out there,” English said. “I had a tough stretch on 4 … I had a tough one on 16. But you’ve got to grind.”

It’s all to play for going into the final round, with 12 men within just two shots of the lead. Jimmy Walker is one shot back, while Bill Haas and Jason Day are only two off the pace.
