Wilson Staff Shockwave driver, £199.99

A great-looking club with a large sweet spot. The alignment aid is fussy but this is the only real criticism for a decent driver at a reasonable price. It produces a solid, if unspectacular, impact noise.

Key technology
The Wilson Staff Shockwave driver is 10% lighter than standard drivers, with a 5g tungsten weight set deep into the head giving a high ball flight. Variable face thickness gives a sweet spot that is twice as wide as a constant thickness driver.

Nike VR 420 driver, £360

A beautiful head that is clearly made for tour players and good amateurs. This has a high price tag for a non-adjustable driver. At address, the VR 420 looks great. The compact design will be a dream for some but, for the majority of us, a good flight requires too much head speed. Confident players should definitely try it.

Key technology
The sole channel in the Nike VR 420 driver increases the compression of the body to produce increased ball speeds across the entire face.
