GLENEAGLES CHARITY GOLF DAY WITH IAN BOTHAM AND RONAN KEATING

Cancer Research UK has announced the staging of a fund raising golf day at the prestigious Gleneagles Hotel in June, which will be jointly hosted by former England cricketer Ian Botham and the singer Ronan Keating, who runs the Marie Keating Foundation in memory of his mother who died from breast cancer. Both men are keen golfers and regular fundraisers for Cancer Research and Leukaemia Research, and the day promises to be keenly contested and lots of fun all for a very good cause.

MONTY TO BUILD UK LUNG CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE

In further charity news, Scottish star Colin Montgomerie has announced that he is working on a joint venture with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation to build a UK centre of excellence for lung cancer research. The proposed facility in Glasgow is to be named The Elizabeth Montgomerie Centre in honour of Colin’s mother, who died of lung cancer in 1991.

“The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation is the only charity in the UK wholly dedicated to the defeat of lung cancer, which is the biggest cancer killer of women as well as men in the UK,” Montgomerie revealed.

“The centre, among other things, will provide top quality research and training as well as dedicated hotlines for both patients and carers. I am thrilled to be working with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation on this exciting project.”

FREE ENTRY TO THE BRITISH GOLF MUSEUM THIS WEEKEND

Finally, the British Golf Museum at St Andrews is marking this weekend’s double celebration of St Patrick’s Day and Mother’s Day by offering free admission for the entire family on both Saturday and Sunday. Exhibits this weekend include a showcase on Royal Portrush and a feature on Fred Daly, who is the only man from across the Irish Sea ever to win the Open. The museum is open from 10am-4pm each day and every visitior this weekend will also receive a free copy of the official souvenir guide.
