Luke Donald has won the 2011 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth after defeating Lee Westwood in a sudden-death play-off for the European Tour's flagship event.

The win for the Chicago-based man meant that he took over as the world number one after months of knocking at the door.

It was fitting that the English duo should fight it out for the title as well as the world number one spot, but after 72 holes there was a cruel ending in store for Westwood.

Donald nearly holed his 30-foot birdie effort on the 18th that would have won him the title outright, but in the end a play-off was required.

However, after a fascinating final day's play Westwood's third into the 18th spun back into the creek to gift Donald the title.

Meanwhile, Simon Dyson finished in third with joint overnight leader Matteo Manassero slipping back into a tie for seventh alongside Colin Montgomerie.
