World number one Tiger Woods has confirmed that he is on schedule to play in this year’s US Open, which starts on June 12 at Torrey Pines in San Diego.
Despite the fact that he has not played a tournament since finishing second in the US Masters in April, Woods believes that he is capable of performing well, even after such a lay off.
“I know what it takes to win a tournament coming back after having an operation, and it is just a matter of being prepared, getting all my practice time in, making sure my shots are how I want them, and trying to understand what my misses might be,” Woods said.
The American made the decision to have the operation three weeks before the Masters, after the stiffness in his knee became too uncomfortable.
The last time that Woods played in the US Open having taken two months off, following the death of his father in 2006, he missed the cut. However, ominously for the rest of the field, Woods won the Buick Invitational at Torrey Pines in 2002, having taken time off after a similar operation on the same knee. He has also won his last five successive tournaments played at Torrey Pines.
