The Paul Lawrie Match Play heads to Archerfield this August with Darren Clarke’s Ryder Cup hopefuls keen to make their mark

In a tournament schedule dominated by 72-hole stroke play events, there is one tournament this summer that offers an alternative perspective on many of the world’s best golfers. Ahead of Europe’s trip to Hazeltine for the 41st Ryder Cup, many of Darren Clarke’s hopefuls are set to battle it out in the Paul Lawrie Match Play. The 1999 Open Champion and Golf Monthly columnist, has again joined forces with the European Tour to host a unique knockout event that pits a high-class 64-man field against each other.

Paul Lawrie: New Golf Monthly Columnist

Taking place from August 4th to 7th, the event will be staged at the impressive Archerfield Links in East Lothian. Situated on a prized stretch of golfing links land between Muirfield and North Berwick, Archerfield offers a fascinating blend of tree-lined and links holes to provide a varied test and stunning views towards Fidra Island, the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s book, Treasure Island. Indeed, the players will compete over the Fidra course, the same layout used to host the Prostate Cancer UK Scottish Senior Open.

Last year, the inaugural Paul Lawrie Match Play was won by Kiradech Aphibarnrat who emerged victorious by defeating Robert Karlsson, 1up, in the final.

Sandwiched between The Open and the Olympics and just a few weeks ahead of the Ryder Cup selection date, the Paul Lawrie Match Play comes at a critical point in this year’s golfing diary.
