Sweden’s Peter Hanson put a one-shot penalty for a double hit behind him to force a playoff for the Open Cala Millor Mallorca against Alejandro Canizares. The Swede went on to take the title at the first extra hole.

Hanson was leading the tournament by a stroke when a slow-motion TV replay showed he had clipped a chip shot at the 12th hole twice when he played from the greenside rough.

After being told of the incident Hanson fell two behind Canizares but he fought back bravely, making birdie putts at the 15th and 17th. When the Swede saved par from the sand on the closing hole he finished regulation play on six-under-par – level with the Spaniard.

The pair went back to the par-3 18th tee to settle the tournament in sudden-death. Canizares fired first but his 4-iron found sand. Hanson found the green but was a long way from the hole on a different level of the putting surface.

It was Hanson who played up first and he lagged a fantastic putt to within tap-in distance for par. Canizares blasted out of the sand, leaving a six-foot par putt. The Spaniard missed and Hanson knocked his in to take the title.

James Kingston of South Africa was third, four strokes adrift of the leading pair.
