Scott Piercy of the USA has won the RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Ontario by a single shot over his countrymen Robert Garrigus and William McGirt.
Piercy began the final round two strokes behind Robert Garrigus, but he made an early move in the final round with four straight birdies from the 2nd hole to climb to the top of the leaderboard on 18-under-par.
Garrigus couldn’t get it going on Sunday as he opened with 13 straight pars. When he finally holed a birdie putt on the 14h though, he was still very much in the running.
Piercy dropped shots on the 8th and 14th holes to fall one back of William McGirt who had reached the turn in just 32 blows. But Piercy bounced back with a chip-in birdie on the 15th. He finished with three straight pars to set a clubhouse total of 17-under.
McGirt dropped a shot on the 15th and was level with Piercy as he approached the final hole. But he was unable to make a par four on the difficult 18th and so he finished one shot short.
Playing in the last group, Garrigus also had a putt to match Piercy’s total. But it came up just shy and Piercy had secured his second PGA Tour title and a start in next week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
“I’ve been playing good for a while now, and you just need a couple of good breaks here or there,”he said. “I felt like I got a couple of good breaks and continued to play solid, and I’m kind of speechless. I’m really excited to be the champion.”
Garrigus and McGirt ended the week in a tie for second, both were left to rue a missed opportunity.
“I should have won this tournament by seven shots. Everybody knows that,” Garrigus said. “If I could have just made a putt today.”
