Today marks the anniversary of the foundation of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. On May 14th 1754, a group of 22 noblemen and gentleman of Fife, known as the ?Society of St Andrews Golfers?, presented a Silver Club to be played for annually over the links course. The club was named, ?The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews? 80 years later, when King William IV became its patron.
Now is the perfect opportunity to take time out from playing and celebrate golf?s history with a visit to the British Golf Museum. The R&A Room contains a selection of gifts given to the club. There is also a fascinating display, ?A Celebration of 250 years of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews?, which explores the history behind the home of golf and takes a look at the memorable festivities that surrounded its 250th anniversary. The interactive multi media display, ?What is The R&A?, is the best way to discover all there is to know about the famous governing body.
The museum is open 9.30am ? 5-30pm Monday to Saturday and 10.00am ? 5.00pm on Sunday. Adult tickets are priced at £5.25 and children?s at £2.90.
