The X Factor – exclusive tips from David Howell's coach
Get your game in shape this week by increasing your torque and therefore your distance from the tee with instruction from Clive Tucker, coach of Ryder Cup star and GM Playing Editor David Howell.
The most powerful hitters in the world are able to create a vast amount of torque between their upper and lower body at the top of the backswing.
Having made a full turn they can then unwind back into the ball. The energy that was created at the top translates into to greater clubhead speed through the downswing.
Apart from making a full turn there is a way to increase the energy in this movement. If your hips start turning back towards the target as your upper body continues to rotate to reach the top of the backswing, you?ll increase the torque. The idea here is that for a fraction of a second, your upper and lower body are moving in different directions. The tension created by this key movement will add force to your downswing.
Work on this and see the results at the weekend.
