We take a look at some of the interesting comments made in the media tent after round one.

“It was just constant rain all the time. It was difficult keeping my hands dry and of course I wear glasses, so that didn’t help.”

Sandy Lyle describes the difficult conditions that resulted in him pulling out of the Open after 9 holes.

“I don’t practise much. I probably practise more tennis than golf.”

Greg Norman is more surprised than anyone at his opening round of 70.

“I didn’t have much trouble sleeping…I had a couple of drinks and went to sleep last night. If this is the summer I couldn’t live here.”

As usual Boo Weekley gives his alternative view on life…

“He is a good guy. You guys may have some problems with him, but I don’t…we talked about the weather, about what I would be doing if I was home.”

…Weekley talks about his experience of playing with Monty.

“I said to Tom Watson out there, where is the worst weather you had, and he said the first round in 1980 in Muirfield. I said “what did you shoot?” He said “68.”

Justin Rose gives an insight into the great man Tom Watson.

“I enjoyed the battle today. I enjoyed going out there, and it really was a battle. You are probably looking at close to 40 percent of the field that really aren’t prepared to play in weather like that.”

Padraig Harrington takes a positive attitude towards the difficult conditions.
