Getting to and from Royal Birkdale

Get the inside track on how best to get to the Open Championship, whether you are coming by road, rail or otherwise.

TRAVELLING BY ROAD

Drivers should be aware that during the Championship the Tall Ships Regatta will
take place in Liverpool. This will attract high volumes of traffic so, to avoid delays, Merseyside Police advise you to follow the specific “Open” signs provided by the AA.

Follow M6, exit at junction 29 (Leyland) to the A582, A59 and A565.
FROM THE EAST:
Follow M62, M57 and A5147.
FROM CENTRAL LANCASHIRE:
Follow M58, exit at junction 3 (Rainford) to the A570.
FROM THE SOUTH:
Follow M6, exit at junction 26 (Orrell) to M58, exit at junction 3 (Rainford) to A570
FROM WALES & THE WIRRAL:
Follow M56, M6, exit at junction 26 (Orrell) to M58, exit at junction 3 (Rainford) to A570.

PARK & RIDE

Park-and-ride facilities will be clearly signed and close to the course. There are no public car parks adjacent to the course and drivers without a reserved parking label should use the park-and-ride facilities instead.

Parking charges
Sunday July 13 to Tuesday July 15: £5
Wednesday July 16 to Sunday July 20: £10
Weekly parking labels are available in advance from the R&A for £45, subject to availability.

BY AIR

Airports local to Royal Birkdale include Manchester (43 miles away), Liverpool
John Lennon (32 miles) and even Blackpool International (37 miles).
For information on facilities for helicopters see www.opengolf.com.

BY RAIL

Local stations include Hillside (0.6 miles away), Ainsdale (2.3 miles) and Birkdale Station (2.6 miles). Hillside is a two-minute walk from the course, with regular trains from Liverpool and Southport. Merseyrail will also provide additional trains during Open week.
