Pro V1
Golf Monthly Senior Staff Writer Paul O'Hagan tests the new Titleist Pro V1 ball
GM verdict: In last month’s issue (The Gear), we talked about how the Pro V1’s promise of improved durability was one of the main features that interested us. After testing it out with a series of wedge shots on a soggy March afternoon, the ball remained white and there were very few scuff marks, even when using new wedges. Compared to previous versions, we felt that the impressive soft feel and control remained, but was combined with more roll on tee shots. But... some simply won’t be able to justify the price tag. PGA pro verdict: I compared this to the 2012 ball, and spent time on the course comparing them side by side. The 2013 ball was about 7-10 yards longer off the driver, and yet it didn’t lose any of its soft feel through impact. Spin was again very predictable around the greens, and the ball felt great off the putter face, especially on longer putts. It was also more durable than the 2012 ball. Test team rating: Performance: 5/5 Visual Appeal: 4.5/5 Innovation: 4/5 Value: 4.5/5 Overall: 5/5
Why you can trust Golf Monthly
Key technology:
The 2013 Pro V1 is designed to be the softest version yet, as well as being longer, thanks to lower long-game spin and a shallower angle of descent. However, the new offering should also produce a steeper angle of decent on approach shots for added control. A new Urethane Elastomer cover and paint system is designed to improved durability.
Will suit... Players seeking control, without sacrificing distance.
