Key technology:

Srixon’s new Spin Skin technology – a coating designed to provide extra grip on the clubface when hitting approach shots – should deliver extra bite. This doesn’t affect shots hit with less lofted clubs, so distance isn’t sacrificed. The actual cover has also been tweaked to offer a softer feel off the face. Resistance through the air is reduced, thanks to four per cent more dimple coverage.

Will suit: anyone after an
all-round premium performer.

Verdict

GM verdict: The Z-Star has always been an impressive product, thanks to plenty of distance and feel, plus excellent durability. The only slight criticism was less spin than some of the other premium offerings. However, this has clearly been addressed, with the new version providing plenty of stop on full and pitch shots into greens. What’s also impressive
is that this has been achieved while maintaining the superb durability on offer. The Tour Yellow version is excellent if
you struggle to follow a white ball through the air. But... the Z-Star XV will offer more distance for mid to fast swingers. PGA pro verdict: The new Srixon Z-Star (in Pure White) felt much softer than I’d expected, although it still gave great ball speed and distance off the driver when I tested it on the launch monitor. I also had great control over the flight and spin around the greens, thanks to the Spin Skin coating. It also performed really consistently on the putting surfaces, especially over longer distances. The Z-Star gave excellent results in wet conditions, and from poor lies in the rough, giving predictable and consistent yardages. This latest version of the Z-Star is certainly one on the best balls currently on the market. Test team rating: Performance: 5/5 Visual appeal: 5/5 Innovation: 4/5 Value: 4/5 Overall: 4.5/5
