Burner OS irons

Key technology:

The Burner OS irons are designed to produce faster ball speeds. The centre of gravity has been positioned very low in the oversized heads to deliver a high launch, and means that lofts can be made stronger to increase distance. Inverted Cone Technology returns and is designed to increase the size of the sweet spot.

Will suit: anyone who feels they would benefit from hitting their irons a little further.

Verdict

GM verdict: A familiar name is combined with familiar technology to create a set that offers both impressive distance and forgiveness, at an affordable price point. The design isn’t revolutionary, but if you’re after irons that fly a club further than most, then these will do the job. Despite the OS (oversize) name, the heads aren’t enormous and the sole isn’t too thick, compared to others in this category. But... there isn’t a great deal of new technology on offer here, and TaylorMade is shortly expected to release a set of irons that will be vastly different and feature new technology. However, this will be reflected in a big difference in price. PGA pro verdict: TaylorMade has introduced a great-value (non-custom) product to its range. The irons were powerful and performed with great consistency throughout the set. Lofts have become a little stronger, and the Inverted Cone Technology and thinner face makes this product ‘hot’ across the majority of its face. It was easy to move the ball in flight and the extra distance I gained was impressive. At this price, and with the excellent forgiveness and added yardage on offer, these irons are tough to beat.
