Here you can read the Golf Monthly TaylorMade RSi 2 irons review

Product Overview

Overall rating:

TaylorMade RSi 2

Pros:

  • A good looking head shape behind the ball is combined with impressive consistency and distance through the set. The consistency on offer from the TaylorMade RSi 2 irons will be the major benefit to many.

Cons:

  • If forgiveness is a particular priority then the larger headed TaylorMade RSi 1 irons should be the first set you try out. The face slots do offer a different look to most at address.

New Face Slots in the TaylorMade RSi 2 long and mid irons (3-8) are designed to offer more consistent distance on shots that miss the centre of the club. These are combined with the return of TaylorMade’s Speed Pockets in the soles of the 3 to 7 irons, which should boost launch angle and ball speed on shots below the centre of the face. Tungsten weight in the toe of the long irons is designed to make them even more forgiving. With so much going on, particularly for a set of irons, it’s practically impossible to quantify what affect each piece of technology is having. What is clear though, is that compared to other irons of this size the performance on offer is extremely impressive. The flight through the bag was high and long on testing but also very forgiving. The long irons are incredibly easy to hit for a head this size, with only head designs that are considerably larger being easier to get up so quickly and easily.

TaylorMade RSi 2 irons

The TaylorMade RSi 2 irons sit in the middle of the family between forgiving RSi 1 and compact TP models. For me this is the set that will appeal to the vast majority of golfers.

If you particularly struggle with your irons then the larger-headed TaylorMade RSi 1 irons should be high on your test list. The more compact RSi 2 will appeal to many though, thanks to the shape of the head and the forgiveness they provide. If you don’t feel as you though you hit your iron shots close enough to the flag, you’ll find improved consistency on distances regardless of whether you hit the centre of the face or not. While the impressive distance through the bag is carried over from other TaylorMade designs, it’s the consistent distances that players of all abilities will really appreciate.

Verdict

Whether the performance on offer comes from the added Speed Pockets or not there is no doubting that the combination of forgiveness, distance and consistency through the set is very impressive.
