The name FootJoy’s VersaLuxe shoe says it all really. It has been designed and styled to offer both on and off course versatility with luxurious style.

Take a pair out of the box for the first time and this elegance is palpable. The premium feel of the SuppleLuxe leather from Pittards and the subtle detailing makes it as appropriate to wear away from the course as it does on the first tee. Plus it’s waterproof for at least one year guaranteed.FootJoy VersaLuxe inset

Out in the course, this shoe impresses. The cork fit bed and rubber outsole combine to provide ample cushioning, plus the suede heel pocket cradles the back of the foot for a secure hold to stop the foot moving around.

The tacky nubs on the outsole provide excellent grip, even from sloping lies and when you really go after a tee shot, and also offer an element of give that is important when walking on firm flat surfaces. We only tested these shoes in dry and slightly damp conditions, so we couldn’t possible speculate on how they’d fare in a deluge, but the signs so far have been very positive.

In the clubhouse afterwards, you feel comfortable wearing them in the strictest of venues, as stuffy older members with questionable eyesight could easily mistake them for a dress shoe rather than a performance golf shoe.

Less we forget this shoe’s primary purpose of providing performance and comfort to the golfer and it certainly delivers on that front. As with the FootJoy FreeStyle shoe, the Versaluxe sizing came out larger than expected so you may need to go down half a size or so to get that all-important snug and stable fit. There are over 20 size and width combinations so be sure to get fitted properly before parting with your cash.

Verdict

Yes, these shoes are towards the upper end of the pricing spectrum, but theoretically you could wear them twice as much when you consider the trip to the course, the round, the clubhouse afterwards and even jaunts into town with jeans. Throw in the excellent on-course performance and immediate comfort, the VersaLuxe could and should be your go-to pair for the season ahead.
