The Belfry has launched a special Ryder Cup-themed social media campaign and is encouraging golf fans to submit their responses via Twitter.

The world’s only four-time Ryder Cup wants users to tweet their memories of the 1989, 1993 and 2002 contests using the hashtag #onthisday.

The campaign – which runs from September 20 to 29 – aligns with the dates of the three contests above.

The 1989 Ryder Cup started on September 22, the 1993 event on September 24 and the 2002 contest on September 27.

Some memorable moments to be shared throughout the campaign include:

26th September: #onthisday 1993 – the first Swedish player to compete in a the Ryder Cup, Joakim Haeggman, claimed a memorable point against John Cook

29th September: #onthisday 2002 – Phillip Price holed a 25-foot putt on the 16th to seal a sensational victory against World No. 2 Phil Mickelson

Those using the #onthisday hashtag will also have the chance to win daily and overall prizes.

The best response for each day will receive Belfry merchandise from its fully-stocked shop, and all entries will be placed into draw to win tee times across the The Brabazon and PGA National courses.

“We are extremely proud of our Ryder Cup heritage history and heritage and it has been a key theme for all of the investment and developments across the resort,” said Ian Knox, The Belfry’s Director of Golf.

“With this likely to be the most interactive Ryder Cup of all time, we wanted to capitalise upon the scheduling of this year’s matches, and run a social media campaign encouraging people to share their memories from three of the four matches we have hosted.”
